(Anita) The Anita City Council appointed City Councilman and Mayor Pro-Tem John Knutson as Mayor at Wednesday’s City Council meeting. Knutson served as Mayor Pro-Tem under Tom Harris, who passed away this past January.
The City Council had the option to fill the position by a special election or by appointment. Anita City Councilman Kevin Littleton says the Council mutually agreed to appoint Knutson rather than opt for a special election.
Littleton says according to Iowa election laws, a notice in regards to the open City Council seat must be published in the paper, and applicants are asked to contact the City Clerk.
The Council also hired Eric Steffensen as the City’s new Public Works Director on Wednesday.
Eric Steffensen’s first day on the job was on Thursday, March 11.
In other business, the City Council signed a new five-year 28E agreement with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and approved the use of Local Option Sales Tax money to fit ten volunteer firefighters with new equipment.
