(Des Moines) A bill has passed through the Iowa House Judiciary Committee regarding free speech in Iowa’s Universities.
Iowa House District 21 Representative Tom Moore said through the legislature’s role in overseeing Iowa’s public universities, it has become clear that there is a problem with schools restricting free speech.
“We have seen numerous examples of students being discriminated against for their political viewpoints. In light of this, we have advanced a bill, based on the recommendations of the board of regents, that seeks to protect free speech. This bill simply ensures that our regent universities have policies and procedures in place to protect free speech, as well as a system of redress for students whose freedom of speech rights have been violated,” explained Moore.
On Tuesday, this bill passed through the Judiciary Committee with a bipartisan vote of 20-1.
