Barbara Rae Schleimer, daughter of Reinhardt and Vernett (Johannsen) Steinkuehler, was born August 5, 1939 in Denison, Iowa. She was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. She attended Tennant High School in Tennant, Iowa, graduating with the class of 1957. She worked at the hospital in Harlan as a Nurse Aide.
On April 7, 1959, Barb was united in marriage to Melvin Pauley at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. Five children were born to this union: Loren, Carol, Jonathan, Dennis, and Dale. After the death of Melvin, Barb worked at the Harlan Apple Orchard while maintaining her own farm and raising her 5 children.
On June 24, 1972, Barb was united in marriage to Raymond Schleimer at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. Together they had one daughter Joan and one son Jami. Barb helped Raymond on their farm.
Barb was a member of the Legion Auxiliary in Panama and the Quilting Club at the Panama Church. She was an avid quilter, making a special quilt for each of her family members. During her quiet moments, she enjoyed reading. She was a loving mother and grandmother.
Barb died on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, attaining the age of eighty-one years, six months, and twenty-two days. In addition to her parents and two husbands, she was preceded in death by her son Jon Pauley, daughter Carol Pauley-Hesser, and siblings Bayla Marshall, Lou Ann Reno, Daryl Steinkuehler, and Ron Steinkuehler.
She is survived by her children Loren (Lu Ann) Pauley of Portsmouth, Iowa; Dennis (Mary) Pauley of Panama, Iowa; Dale (Sharon) Pauley of Panama, Iowa; Joan Armentrout of Harlan, Iowa; Jami (Anna) Schleimer of Elk Horn, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; siblings Shirley (Jerome) Mumm of Harlan, Iowa; Gary (Carolyn) Steinkuehler of Defiance, Iowa; brother-in-law Skip Marshall; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
Funeral Services for 81 year old Barbara Schleimer of Panama will be Monday March 8th at 11a at St. Mary’s Assumption Church in Panama. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday March 7th from 3-8p with a rosary at 6p at the St. Mary’s Parish Center. Burial will be at the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Panama. Pauley Jones Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
