(Anita) CAM’s 42-26 win over Coon Rapids-Bayard on Tuesday ended a three game slide for the Cougar girls. Prior to topping the Crusaders, CAM had lost consecutive matchups with Exira-EHK, Paton-Churdan, and Boyer Valley which dropped them out of the rankings.
Coach Joe Wollum says defense was the key to Tuesday’s win. They led 12-3 at the end of the first half. “Our defense was fantastic all night. We made some changes with personnel on the press that really benefited. During a losing skid you figure out some things you need to change and we hopefully made those changes for the better.” He adds Marissa Spieker was a catalyst. “She really played with some great energy. We moved her to the top of our zone and top of our press. She played with energy and it was contagious. She made a couple three’s as well so she’s one that really stands out as far as getting things changed around for us.”
The team that won their first eight games of the year will try to start a new win streak on Thursday when they oppose a quality ACGC squad in a nonconference game. The Chargers enter at 9-4, but are 0-2 against Rolling Valley Conference opponents.
CAM’s Eva Steffensen is averaging 12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals per game. Zoey Baylor contributes 8 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 4 steals per night. Reese Snyder, Meredith Rich, Marissa Spieker, and Molly Venteicher all average between 6.5 and 7.5 points per game.
Thursday’s matchup between CAM and ACGC will be broadcast on 96.5 FM KSOM.
