(Des Moines) On Wednesday, Chief Justice Susan Christensen gave her speech on the Condition of the Judiciary.
Iowa House District 21 Representative Tom Moore said Christensen noted the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic brought to the judiciary over the last year.
Moore said Chief Justice Christensen also laid out her top priorities to enhance child welfare. The first is to provide funding for parental representation before a case is filed. This should help parents keep their children in their home when at all possible. Her second priority is to elevate family treatment courts. This will provide more treatment for families with child abuse or neglect and help to create better living situations for children.
Moore said on Thursday, Major General Corell addressed the Iowa Legislature on the Condition of the Guard.
The Guard also assisted during the Derecho; they were responsible for clearing debris from city blocks so that power could be restored. 2020 saw the Guard have 1,700+ soldiers and airmen deployed full time on humanitarian and peace keeping missions. General Corell maintained that the National Guard is ready and capable and will remain ready and capable moving forward.
