(Area) The Elks are collecting deer hide donations from hunters. Hides are used in various ways to assist veterans.
Donation boxes are located at the Wiota Fire Station and at the Elks Club in Atlantic located at 411 Walnut Street. “Those deer hides are sent off to be tanned. They have a tannery in Tennessee that donates that work for them. The tanned hides come back and are distributed to veterans either as leather that they can use to make things or there’s gloves they make for disabled veterans that are in wheel chairs. It’s really kind of a neat program.”
Bryan Hayes with the Iowa DNR says last year 77 hides were collected in Cass County which is up from 15 hides the year before. To coordinate a drop off contact Delbert Thurman at 712-249-4756.
