(Des Moines) The National Weather Service has added a new warning to its list over the past year.
Chad Hahn, Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Des Moines, says a new type of warning they’re issuing this winter season is called the Snow Squall Warning, and only one has been issued within the last year. Hahn said only one has been issued and that was in October in the northern area of Des Moines.
Hahn says snow squalls are a unique situation. The weather service produces these with the same software they use when issuing tornado warnings.
Hahn says these are short-duration events that can’t be captured all that well with their sweep of advisories and warnings we’ve talked about earlier.
Hahn says snow squall warnings can be issued when there is one inch of snow under the right conditions, creating hazardous travel conditions.
