(Coon Rapids) District title implications abound as Coon Rapids-Bayard hosts Audubon in a matchup of ranked and undefeated teams on Friday. We’ll have the contest on KSOM.
Coon Rapids-Bayard coach Chris Mohr isn’t downplaying the magnitude of this game one bit. “It’s been circled from the get-go. We knew we’d both have great teams, so the kids are ready to go.”
Coach Mohr’s group had a star studded cast returning on the offensive and defensive line, but the output they’ve gotten from their new starters in the skill positions has been tremendous. “The most impressive thing is the kids that stepped in at the skill positions with Tanner Oswald at quarterback and Gabe Obert at running back. Even Chance Anderson, Easton Hays, and Lance Clayberg have given us good, quality minutes.” Obert leads the team in rushing with 485 yards. They average 313 yards per game on the ground as a team and their total rushing output is 3rd most in 8-Player.
The Crusaders made a big statement by not only beating previously unbeaten Woodbine last week, but by the margin of victory of Tigers at 55-12. “They had some guys out, but we dominated the offensive line and defensive line like we have all year. We kept Layne Pryor in check all game. He’s a great player. He’s a big, physical kid and runs super hard. He’s tough to bring down and tough to cover, but the kids did a great job.”
It won’t get any easier this week when they face Audubon. “They have a three headed monster in the backfield with Gavin Smith and the Klocke twins (Ethan and Joel). They are athletic kids and do a lot of motion to get you flowing. A lot of read options and Gavin does a great job with that.”
The Wheelers are the team they are very motivated to beat. In fact, the the Crusaders could essentially take care of two big firsts this week–win a district title and beat Audubon. “This is huge for both of us. We are both competing for a district title. It’s something we’ve never done at CR-B.”
In the AP top ten this week Audubon is tied for #1 while Coon Rapids-Bayard is ranked 9th. Both teams are 5-0. CR-B averages 54 points per game and allows 20.2. Audubon averages 64.2 points per game and allows 4.6. Catch the action on 96.5 FM Friday night.
