(Atlantic) June is National DJ Month and today we recognize KS95.7 FM Morning Show Host Sarah Archibald.
Sarah said she decided she wanted to become a DJ when she was around 8 or 9 years old.
“I was born and raised in Lewis and we got cable for like the first time and the very first cable show I watched was ESPN Sports Center and I was like ‘that’s what I want to do’, I knew right there I wanted to do sports,” explained Sarah. “I started looking into when I got into high school and I saw that they had a program at Iowa Western for radio and I was like well I get in trouble for talking all the time so why not get paid to do that.”
Sarah worked at a small market radio station for a while in High School and then went on to college to study radio. She interned at a couple of radio stations in Nebraska before getting a job at KSOM/KS95.7 in her early 20’s. Sarah took a break from radio for a while after moving away from the area. She said moved back to the area 13-years ago and it was about seven years ago when she received a message from KSOM Morning Show host Frank Rizzo asking if she would be interested in coming back to work part-time. Sarah took over the Morning Show on KS95.7 about four years ago.
Sarah’s work day involves more than just an on-air show. Her other duties include writing and producing ads for local businesses; updating community calendar and funeral announcements; and you may often see her out and about doing remote broadcasts for special events.
Sarah said besides making Tom Robinson laugh during their witty banter after news headlines; one of the most rewarding parts of her job is the connection she has with the community.
“I love when people come up to me and tell me, ‘Hey love listening to you on the radio, love listen to Frank on the radio, how fun is it working with Tom, Mandy and Bennett?’ Just stuff like that. A lot of times I forget that I’m on the radio because I’ve been doing this so long and just being in front of the microphone is just kind of a normal thing for me,” said Sarah. “I’ll always remember there was a time I believe Tom and I were talking about my daughter wanting an allowance, she was like eight/nine years old and I wasn’t for sure and so you know I was talking to Tom about it and then a couple days later somebody come up to me and they’re like ‘So did Lucy ever get that allowance?’ And I was like, ‘What? Oh yeah, I talked about that on the radio.’ So, that’s what I love the most is just kind of reaching out to people.”
You can listen to Sarah Monday through Friday from 6:00 to 10:00 a.m. on 95.7 FM and 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on 96.5 FM. You can also follow her on Facebook at KS95.7 Mornings with Sarah.
