(Exira) Exira has made plans on how to proceed with their annual 4th of July celebration.
While things won’t be nearly the same as past years, some of the festivities will still be held. Mayor Mike Huegerich acknowledges the 4th of July is one of the things Exira is best known for. “It’s very important and it’s a big money maker for the community club. We are trying to give some people things to do and yet we are trying to appease the coronavirus concerns.”
Mayor Huegerich met with the Community Club on Tuesday night to go over the plans. The parade is still a go with some precautions in place including discouraging candy or other items being distributed. “We are going to extend the route to add about four blocks. That will give people a chance to spread out a little bit more.”
A road run will still be offered on Friday morning as chip timing will allow for runners to be spread out. A carnival will also be held. “They are going to follow the CDC guidelines for sanitizing rides and will have hand sanitizing stations. There will be social distancing in the lines.” Fireworks were never in question and will still be held.
The Community Club will not have a beer garden, but is still considering opening the bar inside the community center during certain hours.
Items eliminated are the rodeo, street dance, community barbecue, kids foot races, and tractor pulls. No entertainment is going to be scheduled in the park, but people are allowed to gather in the park as long as they keep a safe distance from others. A slow pitch softball tournament during the week before or after the 4th is still being discussed.
Huegerich stresses all planned activities are subject to change based on coronavirus trends.
