(Des Moines) The hottest temperatures of the year are forecast this week across Iowa.
Roger Vachlek, with the National Weather Service in Des Moines, said temperatures would reach the upper 80’s today. The hottest temperatures are forecast for Tuesday. The mercury will climb to the low to mid-90 over a good portion of the state. Vachlek said dew points would be in the 60;’s and possibly brushing up against 70, with heat indices from the upper 90’s to 100 degrees.
“People working outside should avoid the peak heating of the day and drink plenty of water and take rests,” said Vachlek
Vachlek said thunderstorm chance increase across northern Iowa Tuesday evening and spread south during the overnight hours into Wednesday. He says some of the storms may be severe north of Highway 20 with damaging winds and large hail possible.
There are intermittent chances for thunderstorms into the weekend. The severity of those storms and rain amounts will become more apparent in the coming days.
