(Oakland) Add Oakland to the list of pools that will not open in 2020. The City Council made the decision in a special meeting on Wednesday evening.
Mayor Brant Miller in a news release says the city received only three applications since March for their advertised lifeguard positions. Miller states the city has, “Exhausted every possible means we have to attempt to get an adequate number of lifeguards for this season, but with no success.”
The city had initially intended to open the pool and follow CDC guidelines for disinfection, but last night voted 5-0 to close for the summer. They reiterate the closure is in no way due to the coronavirus, but rather lack of lifeguards to safely operate the pool. They hope to be open for the summer of 2021.
