(Greenfield) The Greenfield City Council held a public hearing and approved a resolution on the FY20 Budget Amendment at their meeting Tuesday evening.
Greenfield City Clerk Becky Haase said, “The Fire Committee and Rural Fire had agreed to some extra purchases that we didn’t have in the budget for some equipment, some hose and radios, so we were amending the budget for that. The Library did some updates, they put in new carpet and shelving and so we had to amend their budget for that. A lot of that I think were donations and gifts that they received, but we had to amend it to spend it.”
Haase said they had planned to use money they have in the Debt Service to pay the sewer revenue debt this year rather than raising sewer rates to give people a little bit of a break with everything going on with COVID-19; she said they’re still going to do that, but it may be next year.
In other news, Haase said the City Council has decided to not open the pool this season.
“Just a lot of soul searching and what’s the best thing to do, but out of an abundance of caution and thinking about the safety of both the staff there and the citizens they decided not to open,” said Haase. “The Park Board is going to go ahead with the Governor’s decision to open playgrounds as of June 1st so all of the playgrounds at the lakes and the parks will be open June 1st, but they will not be opening the restrooms. We encourage people to still follow CDC guidelines and social distance, wash your hands and things like that.”
The City Council also received a request from Simonne Stofer to allow urban chickens in town. Haase said the City Council is going to do some research and she is going to call some of Stofer’s neighbors to see what their thoughts are if the Council would allow her to have chickens. Currently, Greenfield does not allow any poultry in town.
Haase also noted that Absolute Concrete, the contractor for the street project, is in town this week and they will be doing some utility work for the projects on East Iowa and Southwest Mills. There may be times when streets are blocked off temporarily so they appreciate people’s patience at this time.
