(Anita) The CAM football job was one of the hottest vacancies in the area this offseason. The position has been snatched up by an experienced coach that helped lay the foundation of the program as a player in the 90’s.
Barry Bower has coached in a variety of capacities in his career, but his next gig on the sideline is one that’s near and dear to his heart. Bower was announced this week as the head football coach at CAM.
“It’s been one of those goals for a very long time. I graduated from Cumberland-Massena, but played CAM football when C & M and Anita played together in the 90’s. What peaks your interest is the idea of affecting change in young people’s lives.”
Bower has been involved as an assistant with the Cougars the past few years. He was all set to ease off on the coaching duties once his son graduated in 2019, but that was easier said than done.
“I always caught myself sneaking out to practices. I missed it and it’s always going to be a part of my blood. My wife said to go for it and see what happens. I’m very fortunate to have a wife and family that back me in everything I do.”
Bower will take over a team that returns three ball carriers that had at least 400 yards last season including Lane Spieker who went over 1,600 yards as a sophomore. Four of their top five tacklers are also back led by Joe Kauffman who had 85.5 stops last year.
