(Johnston) Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds appearing at her daily briefing on Monday reported 113 new positive cases of COVID-19 bringing the total to 1,710 positive cases, and one new county, (Cass) for a total of 82 counties with at least one positive case.
The Governor reported 981 negative tests bringing the total to 16,986 negative tests, and a total of 18,696 tested. The State Hygienic Lab has 3,565 tests available. As of Sunday evening, there are 142 patients hospitalized, and 741 have recovered, for the recovery rate of 43-percent. There were two additional deaths; an elderly adult, in Linn County, and an older adult, in Muscatine County.
Governor Reynolds says the number of Iowans recovering from COVID-19 continues to increase daily. The Governor says later this week she will talk about what the epidemic curve is telling us about the state’s onset of illness.
“These signs are encouraging, but no reason for us to let up on our mitigation efforts at this time,” said Governor Reynolds, who expects Iowa’s peak will occur later this month. “And until then we anticipate the number of positive cases and unfortunately deaths to continue to rise as well.”
Reynolds noted long term health care facilities continue to be a big concern despite significant mitigation measures implemented early on including; restricting visitors and screening staff at all shifts, the virus was still introduced to these facilities with devastating consequences.
Staff and residents of long term care facilities account for more than 10-percent of all positive COVID-19 cases in Iowa, and 53-percent of all deaths are residents of long term care facilities.
