(Johnston) Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, speaking at her daily press conference, says COVID-19 is affecting the older adult population more than anyone else. For example, more than 10-percent of all positive cases of COVID-19 are occurring among long term care staff and residents, and 48-percent of all deaths in Iowa are associated with outbreaks in long-term care facilities.
Governor Reynolds says in Linn County alone, 71 out of their 175 total positive cases, are directly related to an outbreak in a single long-term care facility. Two other Long term care facilities in Washington and Tama counties are also reporting outbreaks. Reynolds says IDPH and local public health officials continue working closely with Iowa’s long care associations and facilities to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in those settings, and respond when residents and staff become ill.
Unfortunately, Governor Reynolds expects this week to be equally, if not more difficult. Today, the Governor issued additional closures. She says law enforcement across the state will begin to enforce social distancing.
Iowa Public Safety Commissioner Stephan K. Bayens says the Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement agencies throughout the state stand ready to serve all Iowans when called upon, including this health emergency.
Bayens says violation of the Governor’s recent order could result in the filing of simple misdemeanor charges, but worse, “your actions could place Iowans at risk.”
The additional closures are listed below:
*Malls.
*Tobacco or vaping stores.
*Toy, gaming, music, instrument, movie, or adult entertainment stores.
* Social and fraternal clubs, including those at golf courses, Bingo halls, bowling alleys, pool halls, arcades, and amusement parks.
*Museums, libraries, aquariums, and zoos.
*Race tracks and speedway.
*Roller or ice skating rinks and skate parks.
*Outdoor or indoor playgrounds or children’s play centers, and campgrounds.
