(Elk Horn) Exira-EHK posted a 47-46 win over Audubon Monday night in a big non-conference matchup. The victory extends the Spartan winning streak to 17 games.
With :01.5 left Audubon’s Aleah Hermansen gave the Wheelers the lead with a pair of free-throws. Exira-EHK called timeout and turned to a play they’d practiced during the holiday break. Tatum Grubbs threw a full court pass to Quinn Grubbs who put in the winning shot. Coach Tom Petersen says. “In order for it to be successful it has to be ran pretty much to perfection and I’m not sure we could have ran it better.” Petersen jokes, “It was a perfect pass, from the baseline all the way to the opposite block. I told my son Tyler she might go out for football and be the quarterback. It was a perfect pass and a perfect finish.”
The Spartans were just 4/14 from the line. Coach Petersen says they were fortunate to pull out the win. “Down the stretch we missed a couple of front ends of a one and one and then missed two free-throws that would have sealed the deal.”
Macy Emgarten scored 18 points in the win. Coach Petersen says defense kept them in the game after a slow 2nd quarter on offense. “If it wasn’t four our defense as a group effort I think we would have been in trouble.” He says, “In the third quarter we pressed and that’s what brought us back.”
