(Avoca) AHSTW pulled away from Logan-Magnolia in the final minutes for a 61-48 boys basketball win on Friday in Avoca. The Vikings improve to 15-2 on the season and give coach GG Harris the 100th win of his career.
Raydden Grobe splashed in four 3-pointers in the 3rd quarter and finished with 24 points. Joey Cunningham hit all three of his 3-pointers in the 2nd quarter and finished with 11 points. The offense came in spurts. A quick 11-2 span in the first quarter gave them a 14-10 lead. They were held scoreless for the first 4:00 of the 2nd quarter before turning a 19-17 deficit into a 30-23 halftime lead.
Logan-Magnolia led by as many as four in the first quarter, but AHSTW’s five 3’s in the 1st half evaporated the visitor’s advantage. Early in the 2nd the Panthers battled back with seven straight points to take a brief lead. Dylan Cunard and Tre Melby combined for 19 of the team’s 23 1st half points.
The teams played fairly evenly in the 3rd quarter, but Grobe’s 14 3rd quarter points kept AHSTW in front. Logan-Magnolia had a chance to put the pressure on in the 4th quarter. They closed to within five on a couple of trips down the floor, but never got that big shot to fully swing the momentum.
Sam Porter went 3/3 at the line down the stretch including a big 3-point play to help seal the deal. The Vikings scored the last eight points of the game to stretch the final margin.
Grobe’s 24 points were a game high. Joey Cunningham had 11, Clayton Akers 9, Sam Porter 7, and Michael Mantell 7. Logan-Magnolia got 17 out of Cunard, 14 from Melby, and 13 for Gabe Walski. Cunard and Melby each fouled out of the game, greatly diminishing a rally attempt.
