(Corning) Winterset had two champions and won their 15th John J. Harris Wrestling Tournament team championship with 213.5 points. The Huskies had Kruise Kiburz (138) and Jack West (145) stand atop the podium while Kael Forsyth (160) and Dugan Tolley (285) each managed a runner-up showing.
The race for 2nd was as tight as could be. Atlantic/CAM, Creston/O-M, and Red Oak were neck and neck throughout the tourney. In the upper weights Atlantic/CAM got a pin from Cale Roller (285) to seal 2nd while Creston/O-M jumped ahead of Red Oak for 3rd place when the Panthers had Sam Chapman down Carter Maynes in the 195 pound final.
Atlantic/CAM also had Joe Weaver as the 126 pound champ. In addition to Chapman on top at 195 for Creston/O-M it was Garon Wurster (126) and Jackson Kinsella (182) earning gold. Red Oak crowned Justin McCunn (160) as their lone champ. Other 1st place finishers included Riverside’s Mick Schroder (106) and Jace Rose (113), Mount Ayr’s Bryce Shaha (120), Winterset’s Kruise Kiburz (138) and Jack West (145), Wyatt Appleseth (152) from Panorama, Drew Venteicher (170) from Bedford/Lenox, and Clarinda’s Crew Howard (220). Venteicher’s title at 170 was the result of a 7-5 decision over Bryson Freeberg (Tri-Center)-each wrestler entered the tournament undefeated.
Joe Weaver and Cale Roller were two of four finalists for Atlantic/CAM. Weaver’s championship match featured a 3-0 decision over promising Red Oak freshman Dawson Bond. Roller pinned his way through the tournament including a fall in 3:22 against Dugan Tolley (Winterset) in the finals. For both Weaver and Roller it’s their straight John Harris individual crown. The Trojans were team champs last year and team runners-up this year. A pair of 2nd place finishes were turned in by Ethan Follmann and Kadin Stutzman. Follman’s 120 pound runner-up showing was highlighted by a pin over multi-time state qualifer Connor Attkisson (Tri-Center) in the semi-finals. Follmann fell to Bryce Shaha, of Mount Ayr, in the finals by a 13-6 decision. Stutzman, who picked up three pints to get to the finals, is 35-9 on the season. His loss in the championship round came by fall to undefeated and 5th ranked Wyatt Appleseth (Panorama). Atlantic/CAM also had 3rd place finishes from Aybren Moore (113) and Easton O’Brien (106). Jaxson Bell (132) was 5th and Devin McKay (195) 6th.
Other immediate coverage area teams included Riverside, Nodaway Valley, ACGC and Griswold.
The Bulldogs were seven points away with a top five finish, settling for 7th with 108 points. Six Riverside wrestlers finished on the podium led by champions John Schroder (106) and Jace Rose (113). For Schroder he earned a 4-2 decision in the semifinals and then won a 6-2 decision against Drew Ehlen (Mount Ayr) in the championship. Rose wins his 2nd Harris individual title in as many years. He went head-to-head with Elliot Cooney, of Nodaway Valley, in the finals and won convincingly 14-8. Rose is 24-2 overall. Nolan Moore (138) and Edward Vlcek (195) each placed 4th. Rhett Bentley (145) and Nathan Messerschmidt (285) were each 6th.
Nodaway Valley had three wrestlers finish in the top three and finished just outside the top 10 in the team count with 80 points. Elliot Cooney posted a dramatic comeback win in the semifinals at 113, before falling short in his championship match. Cooney in the semi’s trailed Atlantic/CAM’s Aybren Moore 4-1 with less than :40 left, but got a reversal and then a pin. Austin Wilson ran his unbeaten streak to 26 consecutive matches before falling to Kael Forsyth (Winterset) in the semi’s, 4-1. He responded with back-to-back consolation round wins to finish 3rd place. Jory Christensen (220) was also 3rd fro coach Jesse McCann’s team. Christensen lost a back and forth semifinal to SW Valley’s Tallen Myers and then pinned his next two opponents. Jaxon Christensen was also a medal winner for the Wolverines with a 6th place effort at 126.
ACGC scored 48 points and placed 15th. Gunnar Larsen (132) made an impressive run into the finals before falling in an ultimate tie break to Garon Wurster (Creston/O-M), 3-2. Seth Danker (126) lost a hard fought semifinal to Red Oak’s Dawson Bond by a 2-1 and settled for 4th.
