(Corning) The John J. Harris Wrestling Tournament will take place Friday and Saturday at SW Valley. 22 teams will travel to Corning for the 65th annual event. KSOM/KS95.7 FM will be on hand both days for reports of the early rounds and live coverage of the finals.
According to the January 9th rankings published by The Predicament this year’s field will feature 23 ranked wrestlers. 12 of the 14 weight classes have at least one ranked wrestler in the bracket, led by the 113 points weight class with three rated wrestlers.
The team field looks to have Class 2A 4th rated Winterset as the favorite with quality Hawkeye Ten programs Atlantic/CAM, Red Oak, and Creston/O-M giving chase, some good Western Iowa Conference teams that could make a run at a top five finish include Missouri Valley and Riverside.
Atlantic/CAM is the defending champion. Winterset has won the tourney more than any other school. The Huskies have hoisted the John Harris team trophy 14 times with their most recent crown being in 2005. Creston/O-M has won a dozen times including five straight from 2012-2016.
Weigh ins start at 2:00 p.m. with a coaches meeting at 3:00. The wrestling starts at 4:00. Day one of the tourney includes the pigtail matches, first round, quarterfinals, and first round consolation.
Action resumes on Saturday with the second round consolations at 10:00 a.m. followed by semi-finals and 3rd round consolations at 11:30. The consolation semi-finals are slated for 1:45 with 5th and 6th place matches at 2:45. The Champions and 3rd/4th place matches are scheduled for 3:50 p.m. and we’ll have live play-by-play of the finals Saturday afternoon. Updates of the early rounds will air twice per hour on KSOM and KS95.7 FM.
