(Atlantic) Democratic Presidential candidate Tom Steyer says the “government is broken” and he wants to restructure Washington. Steyer made those comments during a campaign stop in Atlantic on Tuesday afternoon.
Steyer also spoke about clean energy an issue he’s been fighting for over the past 12-years. Steyer pointed toward the passage of the $2.00 per pack cigarette tax he spearheaded that generated $3 to $4 billion per year with the money going to health care for the lower income population.
Steyer also pointed out, that he’s the only candidate in the race who is making climate change his number one priority. He says he will be dramatically surprised if there isn’t another push for clean energy across this country over the next six months. Steyer says he worked hard to stop the last proposed power plant in California slated to be built in a lower income Latino community near the water.
The Democratic Presidential hopeful also addressed mental health an issue he touts as one of the biggest problems in Iowa today. He criticized the closing of some mental health facilities across the state. He points to three-consecutive years of declining life expectancy with the major cause of death alcohol abuse, drug abuse and suicide. He says it’s time for people to realize they stand for something. Steyer says when that happens, people will feel they have more of a purpose in life.
Steyer calls himself an outsider who says he has taken on big corporations by going directly to the people. Steyer says he’s running on climate change, creating a more and just economy, and making health care more affordable.
