(DeSoto) An Illinois woman standing outside a vehicle on westbound Interstate 80 near DeSoto was struck and killed early Saturday morning.
The Iowa State Patrol says the accident happened at 12:18 a.m. near the 107-mile marker. According to State Police, 51-year old Carmen Benitez, of Chicago, Illinois, was standing outside the vehicle that had crashed into a guardrail when a 2019 Escalade, driven by 38-year old Ali Elride, of Queens County, New York, struck and killed her.
Benitez was a passenger in a westbound 2019 Dodge Journey driven by 61-year old Maria Galicia, of Chicago. The Dodge lost control due to slippery conditions and struck the guardrail. Galicia was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Benitez was taken by ambulance to the Medical Examiner.
The accident is under investigation.
