(Area) Accidental invaders have started to work their way inside homes.
ISU Extension Program Coordinator Kate Olson says there are a few main times throughout the year when bugs end up inside. One of those times is when the weather heats up like it did in the early part of this month. “They are usually harmless. They aren’t going to bite or damage the property. They don’t feed on anything, they are mostly just nuisances. ”
Odds are the bugs don’t like to be in your home any more than you like having them around. “In most cases bugs come indoors because they are migrating and they think the house is something they just need to get through or over.”
Spraying is a temporary solution, but sealing up your home tighter will give you longer lasting results. “The best way to manage them is to prevent them from getting in. You can pest proof your hose by installing tight fitting doors, sealing anytime you run a pipe or a wire into your house, caulking around windows and anything like that.”
Olson says if you choose to apply an insecticide yourself, keep in mind its effectiveness it as the mercy of the weather and other factors. It’s important to follow all label directions and spray around all siding, foundation, window sills, door thresholds, and any other places bugs could crawl in.
