(Griswold) Two assistant coaches were promoted to head coaching roles by the Griswold School Board Monday evening.
Chase Wallace will serve as the head football coach for the Tigers while Jake Speer takes over the boys basketball program. Griswold Activities Director Troy Nicklaus comments on what helped Wallace secure his new role. “He was an assistant last year so he knows the system of Griswold athletics. He’s an alumni and played football here. He graduated from college and moved back to the area. He wanted to do some coaching and is a young kid with a lot of enthusiasm. That’ll be nice to have.”
Nicklaus looks for Speer to bring some enthusiasm as head coach of the boys basketball team. “He’s our PE Teacher now and was the assistant coach for a couple of years. When the job opened up he stepped forward and applied for the job. I think he’ll be good with the kids. He’s young and enthusiastic and will bring some good offense and defense.”
Both are familiar with the programs they are taking over. “It’s a big advantage that they know the kids and are both in the school system. Chase works as a para for us in the elementary and Jake teaches here so they are going to be able to be around the kids and communicate with them. I think that’s a big plus.”
The two hires leave just one vacancy remaining for next year. The district is still looking for a cross country coach.
