Additional Coaching Information
Mitch Osborn, Elk-Horn Kimballton and Harlan
Career Record: 707-171 (36 years)
Osborn ranks 3rd in wins among active coaches in Iowa. He’s one of only four that have ever reached 700. Osborn’s 19 state tournament appearances are the most of any coach in state history. He’s won three state championships and has been a runner-up five times. He’s 16-3 all-time in the first round at state. From 1989-98 he took teams to state nine times in ten years.
Carl Cochran, Elk Horn-Kimballton
Career Record: 551-310 (39 years)
Cochran is best known for his days at Tri-Center where he’s still an assistant coach, but he actually got his first head coaching gig at Elk Horn-Kimballton. In 39 years as a head coach he oversaw five state appearances and went to the finals in 1986. Cochran is the driving force behind Tri-Center’s summer camp which has been and continues to be widely regarded as one of the best around. His son Cary graduated as Iowa’s all-time leading scorer in 1997 with 2,650 career points. He’s since been passed by Wapsie Valley’s Brooks McKowen at 2,831.
Darrell Burmeister, Bridgewater-Fontanelle and Nodaway Valley
Career Record: 589-227 (36 years)
Burmeister’s started to flourish ten years into his career when Bridgewater-Fontanelle joined Greenfield and became Nodaway Valley. As head coach of the Wolverines he has won 80% of his games. Burmeister went 7-2 in his first three trips to state including a championship in 2006 and runner-up in 2005. He’s guided six trips to state, five undefeated regular seasons, 12 district titles, and 13 Pride of Iowa Conference Championships. Burmeister has a widespread reputation having his team extremely prepared for each game with countless hours spent scouting opposing teams. In cross country he has been a national coach of the year finalist and Golden Plaque of Distinction recipient from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
Frank Schnoes, West Fork, SCMT Sheffield, Shelby-Tennant
Career Record: 558-200 (34 years)
The most notable career achievements for Schnoes came after he left southwest Iowa. He was a two time state runner-up with West Fork and took five teams to state.
Steve Blazek, Atlantic
Career Record: 541-271 (39 years)
Blazek went into the IHSAA Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014. He’s 26th on Iowa’s all-time wins list. Blazek guided Atlantic to a 3rd place finish in the 2002 state tourney. While the bulk of his career was spent in Atlantic, he also had stops at Sutherland, Fox Valley, and Newtown-Harris, MO. Blazek spent time as a freshman coach at ADM following his retirement as a full-time educator and coach.
Dave Lansing, Harlan and Mount Pleasant
Career Record: 434-208 (33 years)
Lansing took the Cyclones to state in 1984. He’s the father of Indiana State basketball coach Greg Lansing. Entering the 2019-20 season he was one of just 95 coaches in Iowa history with at least 400 wins.
