(Atlantic) Hawkeye Ten Conference athletes in all four spring sports are participating in something called the Quarantine Cup.
Atlantic cross country and basketball coach Dan Vargason was the mastermind behind it. He explains there are ten activities for each spring sport, like a miniature decathlon. “Obviously losing the season wasn’t ideal for any of the kids and we can’t replace that, but we felt if we came up with ten events for tennis, golf, soccer, and track then maybe it gives them something to do.”
All schools in the Hawkeye Ten are invited to participate and some of them are attacking the challenge pretty enthusiastically. Vargason notes Atlantic, Lewis Central, and St. Albert have all been very receptive to the idea. “They’ll send their results to me and we’ll score it out. Each event is worth up to ten points. If you win it you get the points, we total your points and whoever has the most points is the Hawkeye Ten Champ in that sport.” They’ll also have an overall Quarantine Cup champion which adds up all the places in the various sport. Winning a sport gives you 15 points with ten points for 2nd and seven points for 3rd to come up.
Participating schools will each contribute $100 for a scholarship. “The winning school will get to give a scholarship to a graduate who lost out on their senior season. It’ll be mostly funded coaches and school districts.”
April 27 was the first day of the three week event so athletes have until May 15th to complete their ten events.
