(Exira) Throughout this week in our sports coverage we are celebrating the 2013 Exira-EHK state runner-up football team. On Friday KSOM will re-air the state championship game against Don Bosco.
Leading up to our Classic Game of the Week, we’ll hear from some of the key players on the team including lineman Zach Kliefoth. Kliefoth was a junior on that 12-1 squad. He had no hesitation when asked about what made the team great. “First off the leadership of the seniors we had. Nick Peppers, Trey Sander, Joe Harris, and all those guys were fantastic. Our backfield with Nick and Trey and Drew Peppers they ran over people and carried our entire team. Tate Simpson as a wide receiver had an outstanding year as well.”
The team breezed their way into the finals by outscoring their playoff opponents 206 to 27. That included a 56-7 victory over Newell-Fonda in the semifinals. Thinking back specifically to the championship game brings mixed emotions. “When you think about it you get really sad, but it’s something that very few people get an opportunity to play in. I’m very grateful for it.”
The replay of the Exira-EHK vs Don Bosco game in the 2013 8-Player state championship will come your way this Friday, May 1st on KSOM at 6:00 p.m.
