***Editor’s Note-The Girls Track Season has been cancelled. However, our interview with coach Larissa Potter was conducted prior to Friday’s announcement from Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds
(Griswold) The girls track squad at Griswold has nearly doubled in size from last year. Tiger coach Larissa Potter calls it an awesome team.
She has 21 athletes to work with, 11 of which are returners from last season. There are five freshmen and five other newcomers. The shuttle hurdle that ran at state last year was made up of Jordyn Main, Josie Mundorf, Jocelyn Amos, and Hope Ogg. None of them graduated.
Throwing events will be strengths too. Potter says, “We have Josie Mundorf and Paige Luft returning in both shot and discus and we have Kalainee Teaney and she’s looking very strong in both so I’m excited to see those three.”
Another good area looks to be 400’s and 800’s. “Lydia Greiman has been working really hard as well as Grace Cook and Haylee Pennock.”
Coach Potter notes Maddy Main will slide into distance races and has some promise, McKenna Weichman is a freshman that comes in with a lot of talent, and Erin Petersen can factor in.
Having a deeper roster is a big bonus. “It’s going to be so exciting to have people to put in different events and hopefully fill a lineup. Having those extra bodies is going to be so nice.” The team had 12 on the roster last year, so they’ve increased their total by nine.
Spring sports are in line for a potential return to competition on May 4th. Organized group practices are penciled in to return on May 1st.
