(Avoca) The AHSTW girls soccer team will look to build around a pair of seniors this season. The Lady Vikes are coming off of a 6-7 season in 2019.
Paige Osweiler and Sydney Zimmerman bring back the most experience for coach Beth Herbst’s team. Unfortunately coach Herbst isn’t entirely sure what her roster will look like. “We were unable to have our player/parent meeting, but from what I’ve heard we have about ten players returning. I have two seniors, Paige Osweiler and Sydney Zimmerman. They are excellent leaders and players. I also have a couple of juniors coming back with Julia Kock and Claire Denning.” Zimmerman led the team with 63 saves last year.
Coach Herbst identifies some areas they want to improve on as communication, working as a team, and scoring more goals. Julia Kock returns after leading the team with 12 goals last season, but they must replace their next three highest point producers in Jordyn Holtz, Katie Anzalone, and Madison Simonsen. Coach Herbst comments on how she’s advised the team to prepare for the season during the suspension of spring sports. “Unfortunately I can’t have any communication with them one on one so we have to do everything through social media. I’ve just told the girls to get ball touches every day and run to stay in shape. We don’t know if we are going to get a season or not. Obviously we hope we do.”
The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released an updated schedule for spring sports earlier this week outlining a May 8th start for competition with a regular season of just over three weeks. That’s assuming practices are allowed to resume on May 1st.
