(Audubon) The Audubon baseball team will have a new head coach this season. Matt Wilder brings an impressive baseball background to the dugout for the Wheelers.
Wilder played at Newman Catholic High School and NIACC in Mason City. In high school he played for two of the most successful coaches in Iowa history. Some of the coaches he learned from in college are now assistant coaches with professional organizations.
Wilder takes over for Sean Birks who resigned upon being named the school’s activities director. He inherits a team that went to a district final last year and brings everyone back. “Coach Birks left the program in a pretty good spot.” He adds, “I think there is a good, realistic chance we should be competing to finish towards the top of the conference. We want to get better everyday and work on the fundamentals.”
Wilder describes the team as a good, athletic group as evidenced by their state runner-up finish in football. “We have the athletes. Withe everyone coming back they’ll all be familiar with each other. It’s just going to be a matter of putting everything together.”
