(Audubon) Last season the Audubon girls track team had an impressive collection of young talent. It remains to be seen if the Wheelers will get to showcase their ability this season.
Audubon put together some impressive events by the end of last season including top 20 times in Class 1A in the 4X400 and 4X800 meter relays along with Grace Slater standing out in the distance races and Melissa Deist being among the area’s top throwers.
Deist established PR’s of 39-01 in the shot. Jaci Christensen threw the discus 111-07 and qualified for state and Elizabeth Zaiger had a best throw of 101-11. Coach Tony Konkler says, “Our throwers have been really strong for us with Melissa placing 5th at state last year, Jaci qualifying, and Elizabeth narrowly missing out.” Deist threw ten inches further than her previous best when she got to the state meet to earn a medal in the shot put last year.
On the track they’ll still be young, but should be very good. “We have the freshman group back as sophomores with Hannah Thygesen, Aleah Hermansen, and Abigail Zaiger all being strong mid-distance runners and Grace Slater back that was a good long distance runner for us. We have five freshmen coming and all five of them should fit in really well with the group that we have.”
Slater was 17th at state in the 3000. She teamed with Hannah Thygesen, Aleah Hermansen, and Abigail Zaiger to finish 20th in the 4X800 and 16th in the 4X400. No group practices are taking place, so athletes are doing workouts individually. As of now (April 1st), spring sports participants are on line to get back to group activities April 13th.
