(Anita) CAM graduate Mitchell Williamson has gone from doing two sports at once to having none at all. The Central College freshman was on the football team and a member of the track squad for the Dutch.
Williamson was looking forward to the outdoor season in track, but admits if something like this was going to happen it is better to happen early in his career. “The indoor season was a little rough trying to adjust to the substantial jump in the weight for the implements from high school to college. I was starting to pick it up towards the end of the indoor season, so I was looking forward to this outdoor season. Plus during the outdoor season you have the hammer and the javelin so I was looking forward to learning those two things With how everything has gone you just have to take it in stride”
As far as football goes, Williamson initially vied with some veterans for playing time at outside linebacker, but ultimately saw all of his reps come at the JV level. “There were a few older guys and there experience took over and kept them ahead of me.” He says he went from being a big fish in a small pond to a small fish in a big pond. “We had a JV schedule so I was able to get a lot of playing time there. Overall it was a good learning experience for the first year.”
Central won the American Rivers Conference last season and Williamson says they made some strides during their winter lifting with hopes of having an even bigger year ahead. “They know how to put on the weight in college and it’s a lot of fun being with a group of 70-80 guys that are all working for the same thing. The atmosphere is just second to none.”
While some of the dual sport athletes focus on the sport that is in season and put the other on the back burner, Williamson was going through both football lifting and track practices when COVID-19 brought that all to an end.
