(Atlantic) Five players scored in double-figures to lead Glenwood past Atlantic 80-50 in a Hawkeye Ten Conference girls’ basketball game at Atlantic on Thursday night. The win moved the Rams to 16-0 on the season.
Glenwood went 30-66 from the field and 8-22 from beyond the arc. Jenna Hopp and Madison Camden led the charge with 14-points each. Emma Hughes scored 13, Elle Scarborough added 12, and Coryl Metheny 10. Abby Hughes finished with 8, Joslyn Lewis, 5, and Brynlee Arnold and Haylee Sell tossed in two-points each.
Emma Hughes and Coryl Metheny provided the visitors with some quality minutes off the bench. Hughes was 4-6 from behind the arc, and 1-2 from the free-throw line. Metheny was 3-5 from the field and led the team with 9 rebounds.
Glenwood gained a 17-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter and blew the game open in the second frame. The Rams jump switch full-court press sparked a 21-5 run and broke open a 38-18 lead at the break.
“We had eight straight positions with a turnover,” said Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason when asked about Glenwood’s second-quarter performance. “They’re a talented team. They didn’t need any extra breaks.”
The Trojans upped their offensive output in the second half with 32-points, but the talented Glenwood squad didn’t waver and polished off the win with 44-second half points of their own to seal the win.
“Glenwood is a great basketball team,” said Vargason. “Let’s not kid ourselves they’re the best team in western Iowa and my pick for the Class 4A state championship. They’re good.”
McKenzie Waters and Haley Rasmussen led Atlantic with 12-points each, Tessa Grooms, 10, Corri Pelzer 7, and Taylor McCreedy 4. Jada Jensen and Nellie Grooms finished the night with 2-points each.
Atlantic, (8-8), travel to Saint Albert on Friday night. Glenwood hosts Treynor on Tuesday.
