(Treynor, IA) — Treynor was able to hold off rival Underwood and advance to the Dome with a 17-14 in a Class 1A Quarterfinal match up on Friday night.
Finn Mieska returned from a broken arm to lead Treynor to the 1A Semifinals.
The Cardinals took the opening kickoff and moved down the field and into the end zone on a three yard TD run by QB Kratyn Dirks to make it 7-0 Treynor.
Underwood went three and out but Treynor could not take advantage of a short field and Finn Mieska missed a 32 yard field goal. The Eagles went 3 and out again and dropped back to punt but Kyle Parrott broke free for a block and the Cardinals took over on the Underwood 6 yard line. On the next play, Dirks dove into the end zone to make it 14-0 with 8 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Eagles went to their no huddle offense and were able to move the ball on the ground with quick runs from River Allen a few short passes — they capped the drive with a 13 yard TD run from Jackson Hughes to cut the lead in half 14-7. The Cardinals would respond with a long drive that ended with a Mieska 23 yard field goal it was Treynor leading 17-7 at the half.
Underwood turned it over on downs on their first drive of the 2nd half but the Cardinals fumbled it back to the Eagles at the Cardinal 37 yard line and Nash Mitchell found Maddox Mechaelsen for a beautiful lob pass and catch on a 10 yard TD at the 7:24 mark of the 3rd quarter to make it 17-14.
After a Cardinal 3 and out, Underwood moved to the Treynor 31 yard line and facing a 4th and short, Allen was tripped up by Will Sadir just short of the first down. Treynor held the ball into the first part of the 4th quarter and had to punt it away. Underwood took over with 8:08 left on their own 15 and started a long drive — on 3rd and 8 from their own 49, Mitchell found Kyle Sub for a first down to the 40 yard line. After an incompletion and a short run, on 3rd and 8 Mitchell scrambled for a long run but holding was called on Underwood. It was 3rd and 13 and the Eagles miscommunicated on a pass route for an incompletion. On 4th and 13, there was a false start and it was 4th and 18 and Mitchell threw an interception to Riley Lauver.
Treynor took over on the Underwood 47 yard line after an unsportsmanlike penalty on the Eagles with 3:51 left. The Cardinals, however, had to punt it and it went out of the end zone.
Underwood had the ball at their own 20 yard line with 2:11 left. The Eagles, however, were called for offensive pass interference on the first play and it was 1st and 20. On 3rd and 18, Mieska would pick off Mitchell to clinch the game and a trip to the Dome.
Underwood finishes their season at 9-2 — both losses coming to the Cardinals.
Treynor is now 10-1 and will play #1 Iowa City Regina Catholic on Friday, November 13 in the semifinals at 10:00 am
Underwood (9-2) 0-7-7-0 — 14
