(Avoca) Court records show an Avoca man originally charged with attempted murder in October 2025 has accepted a plea agreement.
Twenty-nine-year-old Shaun McCarthy pleaded guilty in July to amended charges of Reckless Use of a Firearm – Bodily Injury and three counts of Child Endangerment. Three other charges were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.
McCarthy was sentenced on August 20 to two years of probation and ordered to pay restitution to the victim. The court also ordered that a no-contact order with the victim remain in effect for five years.
McCarthy was arrested by Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s deputies in October 2025 following a shooting and brief standoff in Avoca. He initially faced charges of Attempted Murder, Willful Injury – Causing Bodily Injury, Going Armed with Intent, Reckless Use of a Firearm, and three counts of Child Endangerment.
