ISU Police Report: 33 Arrests, Citations, and Referrals During 801 Day
(Ames, IA) — Iowa State University police say 33 people were arrested, cited or referred during Saturday’s welcome weekend celebrations. Commonly known as 801 [[Eight-Oh-One]] Day, the unofficial tradition marks the Saturday before classes begin, when fraternities and sororities can start drinking at 8:01 a.m. Sixteen citations were issued for possession of alcohol by people under the legal drinking age, and 14 people were arrested for public intoxication. Police say about half of those arrested or cited were not affiliated with the university.
Iowa State Fair 2026 Breaks All-Time Attendance Record
(Des Moines, IA) — Attendance at this year’s Iowa State Fair broke an all-time record. More than 1.2 million people visited the fair during the 11-day run, surpassing the previous record set in 2024 by 36,000 fairgoers. Four days during this year’s fair broke all-time attendance records. Next year’s Iowa State Fair is scheduled for August 12th through the 22nd.
Diesel Hits All-Time Recorded High Average Price-Per-Gallon In Iowa
(Des Moines, IA) — An unfortunate record is being set in Iowa. According to Triple-A, the statewide average price per gallon of diesel in Iowa reached $5.45 on Monday. That’s the highest ever recorded average, beating the previous record of five-44, set in June of 2022. Diesel has jumped 50 cents over the last month and almost two dollars in the last year. The average price for a gallon of regular in Iowa was $4.07.
Sheldahl Mayor Dies Following Motorcycle Crash
(Sheldahl, IA) — A central Iowa mayor has died following a motorcycle crash over the weekend. The City of Sheldahl [[ SHELL-dahl ]], just north of Des Moines, announced that Mayor Todd Anderson died after a motorcycle crash Saturday evening. No additional details about the crash have been released. Mayor Pro Tem Kyle Greenwood will serve as acting mayor until a successor is appointed.
More Layoffs At Wells Fargo’s West Des Moines Campus
(West Des Moines, IA) — More pink slips are going out to workers at Wells Fargo. The Iowa WARN website reports that an additional 14 workers will be laid off at the bank’s West Des Moines campus, effective October 17th. A total of 322 Wells Fargo workers have been let go from the Des Moines metro so far this year. The company says it’s using more artificial intelligence to streamline operations.
