(Atlantic) The Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors welcomed Josh Keul of Keul Electric L.L.C. as the newest Chamber member during a visit on Thursday, August 20th. Based in Corning, Keul Electric specializes in commercial, industrial, and petroleum electrical projects throughout southwest Iowa.
Electrical work runs deep in the Keul family. Josh is the third generation to enter the trade, following his grandfather, Melvin, who established Keul Electric Services Inc. in Des Moines in 1959, and his father, Mike. Josh grew up around the family business and eventually followed the same path, earning his electrician’s license after high school and later working in the electrical and construction industries.
His career eventually took him into a business consulting role, where he traveled throughout the Midwest helping electrical contractors build their companies. After spending time in the corporate world, Josh wanted to get back to the trade and to southwest Iowa. While working as an Electrical Instructor at Southwestern Community College, he noticed many of his students were leaving the area after graduation because they couldn’t find work locally. He also saw larger electrical projects going to contractors from outside the region.
Josh decided to see if he could change that. In 2017, he established Keul Electric L.L.C. in Corning, with the goal of building an electrical contracting company that could compete for larger projects while creating jobs and opportunities close to home. The response was strong enough that Josh eventually left his position at SWCC to focus on the growing business full-time.
Today, Josh and his father, Mike, work alongside a team of skilled employees on commercial, industrial, and petroleum projects throughout the region. Recent projects include wastewater treatment plant expansions in Creston and Winterset, a fire station in De Soto, and the new Building Trades Training Center at SWCC.
That growth is continuing with a new 10,000-square-foot office and warehouse facility under construction at 2264 Avenue of Industries in Corning. The new building will provide additional storage space, room for office support staff, and a new industrial electrical supply depot.
For Josh, the business also carries on a family name that has been part of the electrical industry for more than six decades. Re-establishing the Keul Electric name in 2017 was something he was determined to accomplish while his grandfather was still alive. Today, that legacy continues while Keul Electric creates new opportunities right here in southwest Iowa.
