(Adair Co.) The Adair County Board of Supervisors has approved plans to add lighting to the veterans memorial stones located on the south side of the Adair County Courthouse property.
Roland Purdy, who serves on the committee overseeing the memorial stones, told the supervisors the committee wants to install lighting so the names of veterans etched into the stones can be seen at night. Purdy said the committee has the funds to pay for the project but needs the county’s permission and support to move forward.
Purdy said the lights would be positioned so they do not distract drivers traveling around the square or those parking nearby. The goal is to provide enough lighting to illuminate every name on both the front and back of the stones.
Purdy also said the committee would take responsibility for removing snow from the area. That raised concerns among supervisors about potential county liability if someone were get injured.
The board approved a motion allowing the lighting project to proceed, pending a review to ensure the county would not be liable for injuries related to the memorial area.
Supervisor Matt Wedemeyer was the lone vote against the motion.
