(Harlan) The Rosmann family of Harlan will host a Practical Farmers of Iowa field day Saturday, August 22, offering the public an opportunity to learn about sustainable farming practices and the family’s commitment to stewardship.
The free event, titled “A Practical Farm Family’s Journey: Sustaining a Legacy of Stewardship,” will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. at Rosmann Family Farm and Farm Sweet Farm, located at 1222 Ironwood Road near Harlan.
Rosmann Family Farms is a 700-acre certified organic farm that supports three generations of the Rosmann family. The farm produces corn, soybeans, popcorn, small grains, forages and pasture, along with cattle, hogs and chickens.
Over the years, the Rosmanns have developed a patchwork of 47 different fields across the farm. The family practices contour farming and ridge-till and produces compost to fertilize its fields.
During the field day, Ron Rosmann will share information about his new book, “A Practical Farmer’s Journey: A History of Community, Stewardship and Resilience.” The Rosmann family will then lead attendees on a tour of the farm and discuss the practices that inspired the book.
Topics will include continuing sustainable farming practices across generations, weed control and ridge-till strategies, recycling nutrients through compost and crop rotation, marketing organic beef and pork, and farm support programs and opportunities.
