(Des Moines) The threat for severe thunderstorms returns to the state Monday evening.
Storms are expected to develop after dark across northwest Iowa and could continue into the overnight hours. The primary threats will be large hail and damaging wind gusts. The northwest corner of the state is under a Slight Risk, or Level 2 out of 5, for severe weather.
Farther south, Harrison, Shelby, Audubon, Pottawattamie, and Mills counties, along with portions of Cass, Guthrie, and Montgomery counties, are included in a Marginal Risk, or Level 1 out of 5, for severe storms.
At the same time, dangerous heat continues to grip much of Iowa. An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through Tuesday as temperatures climb into the 90s, combined with high humidity to produce heat index values exceeding 100 degrees for multiple days.
Little relief is expected overnight, with temperatures only falling into the upper 70s and lower 80s.
