(Red Oak) Like many southwest Iowa counties, Montgomery has been hit with its share of severe weather.
Brian Hamman, the county’s EMA Coordinator, appeared in front of the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors and said severe weather events occurred on May 15, 16, 17, and 18, and June 11. Hamman says the two main events happened on May 15 when straight-line winds affected the Red Oak and Stanton areas, and on June 11, which included wind, hail, and a tornado from Stanton east to Adams County.
Hamman says that to date, they have had approximately 22 applicants, and none of them qualify.
Hamman says Disaster Case Advocacy is another program available to all survivors. This allows storm victims to talk to an advocate who helps them navigate the resources available to them, for example, unmet needs. There is no money tied to this, but they are there to help guide victims through the recovery process.
On June 11, 2026, severe thunderstorms produced significant damage across Montgomery County. For instance, near Villisca, wind gusts reached approximately 73 mph, causing widespread damage. Several grain bins north of town near the junction of U.S. Highways 34 and 71 were damaged or completely blown apart, while numerous trees and power lines were knocked down throughout the area.
