Madison County Sheriff’s Office: Man Admits To Shooting, Killing His Mother
(Madison County, IA) — A Central Iowa man investigators say admitted to killing his mother is facing a murder charge. Madison County Sheriff Jason Barnes says deputies responded to a rural home for a welfare check Monday morning, and found 60-year-old Tammy Corkrean deceased with multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators say they were questioning the victim’s son, 23-year-old Theodore Corkrean, when he admitted to shooting his mother on Sunday. He’s facing a first-degree homicide charge, and is in custody at the Madison County Jail.
Federal Judge Strikes Down USDA Approval Of State Restrictions On SNAP Program
(Washington, D.C.) — A ruling by a federal judge strikes down the USDA’s approval of SNAP waivers in Iowa. On Monday afternoon, U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson ruled that the Department of Agriculture exceeded its authority by approving the waivers in five states. The restrictions made certain items like candy, energy drinks, and soda SNAP ineligible. The waivers took effect on January 1.
Iowa Joins Lawsuit Challenging California’s Plastics Act

The Iowa Attorney General’s Office says Iowa is joining 16 other states arguing California’s Plastics Act has reaches beyond California’s borders. The act says sellers can only access California’s markets if their production, packaging design, and waste disposal procedures comply with the state’s environmental mandate regarding the use of plastics. Iowa is joining 16 other states in suing to stop enforcement of California’s Plastics Act.
Record 5.1 Million Midwesterners Expected to Travel for Fourth of July
(Undated) — A record number of Midwesterners are expected to travel for the Fourth. Triple A says five-point-one million people are expected to travel in the Midwest region, consisting of seven states including Iowa. The majority of those travelers will be driving, with about four-point-three million driving at least 50 miles from home. Air travel numbers are down in the region.
Eight Rural Iowa Properties Receive Preservation Grant Funding
(Des Moines, IA) — Eight historic properties in Iowa are receiving preservation grants from the state. The Iowa Economic Development Authority’s State Historic Preservation Office has awarded 750 thousand dollars grants. The Rural Heritage Revitalization Grants are awarded to historic properties in communities with fewer than 50 thousand residents outside of urbanized areas.
