(Massena) A severe thunderstorm tore through southeast Cass County on Friday evening, snapping and uprooting trees, damaging outbuildings, flooding, knocking out power, and causing extensive crop losses.
Late Friday night, the National Weather Service issued two tornado warnings for the area as the storm system lingered, moving eastward at approximately five miles per hour. One resident in the area reported 8.5 inches of rainfall south of Massena.
Mike Kennon, Emergency Management Coordinator, toured the affected area this morning. Kennon tells KSOM/KS95 News there is a concentrated area of damage starting at Wichita Road and Victoria Road, south of Cumberland, and extending east, causing some damage to Southwest Iowa Egg at 75868 Victoria Road.
Kennon says the storm ripped roofs off a couple of barns, leveled some pole buildings, damaged siding and roofs on some homes, and caused crop damage from wind and hail.
Kennon says the storm continued to develop over the same area, along with a couple of separate tornado warnings issued by the National Weather Service. Kennon is submitting photos to the National Weather Service in hopes that they will send a storm damage team to the area to assess the damage. Kennon is confident there was some level of tornadic activity in this area.
