(Adams Co.) The Adams County Sheriff’s Office has recently received multiple reports of scams involving individuals falsely claiming to be members of their office.
In these incidents, callers are telling victims that:
-A family member has been arrested and money is required to release them.
-The person being called has an active warrant for failure to appear for jury duty
-Payment must be made immediately through money orders or other forms of payment.
These claims are not legitimate.
The Adams County Sheriff’s Office will NEVER call and demand payment for warrants, jury duty violations, or the release of a family member. Law Enforcement agencies do not collect payments over the phone.
The Sheriff’s Office is also aware that the scammers may appear to be calling from Adams County Sheriff’s Office phone numbers. This is known as “spoofing”, where scammers manipulate caller ID information to make it look like the call is coming from a legitimate agency.
If you receive a call like this:
-Do not send money or provide personal information
-Hang up Immediately
-Call the Adams County Sheriff’s Office directly using the official Adams County Sheriff’s Office phone number to verify the information
If you believe you have been targeted by this scam, please report it to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.
