(Atlantic) During a legislative coffee in Atlantic Saturday morning, District 9 Senator Tom Shipley spoke about legislation that has been introduced that would change the County Treasurer, Auditor and Recorder positions from elected to appointed.
Shipley stated that he has no idea where this came from and he can’t see anything positive coming from it.
Shipley said he would like someone to explain the rationale for why they thought this was a good idea.
Shipley also mentioned that most of their work starting out involves completing subcommittee action on bills so they can move to full committee. He highlighted some of the topics discussed in subcommittee, including school start dates; specifically getting away from the locked in August 23rd date.
Another bill would require public schools to accept cash as legal tender as a form of payment for entry into extracurricular interscholastic events.
Shipley said he understands there are security issues with making sure the money doesn’t get stolen and so on, but he believes there are more arguments in favor of accepting cash as legal tender.
Shipley also reminded attendees that all of the bills being proposed are in the early stages, and very few of them advance very far.
District 21 House Representative Tom Moore was unable to make it to the legislative coffee in Atlantic Saturday morning.
