(Atlantic) The Atlantic girls’ basketball team started fast and finished strong Tuesday night, cruising to a 57–21 victory over Red Oak at Atlantic.
Makenna Schroeder paced the Trojans from the perimeter, while Katrina Williams and Brynn Lamp controlled the paint. Schroeder led Atlantic with 17 points, knocking down five three-pointers to raise her season total to a team-leading 25. Williams, the Trojans’ 6-foot post presence, added 15 points. Kaitlyn Hickman scored 7, Madison McLaren finished with 6, Brynn Lamp and Jillian Saathoff chipped in 4 apiece, and Peyton McLaren and Tessa O’Brien each added 2 points.
Ellison Johnson led Red Oak with 8 points. Kaylee Erickson contributed 5, Natalie Johnson and Emily Sebeniecher scored 3 each, and Ellie O’Neil added 2.
Atlantic jumped out to an 18–5 first-quarter lead behind Williams, who scored 13 points in the opening period. The senior showcased a versatile scoring touch with mid-range jumpers and strong finishes around the basket. Schroeder caught fire in the second quarter, draining three shots from beyond the arc as the Trojans built a commanding 38–7 halftime advantage.
Atlantic extended the lead to 35 points in the second half, triggering a running clock for the remainder of the game. Red Oak found some offense in the third quarter as Sebeniecher and Erickson each connected on three-point shots, and Ellison Johnson added four points.
Coach Vargason emptied the bench in the fourth quarter, giving valuable minutes to his younger players. Tessa O’Brien knocked down a two-point basket, and the Trojan defense remained stout, limiting Red Oak to just two points in the final frame.
The Trojans forced multiple turnovers, particularly in the first half, while keeping their own turnovers to ten. Atlantic led 18–5 after one quarter, 38–7 at halftime, 49–19 after three, and closed out the 57–21 win.
Atlantic improves to 8–7 and travels to Clarke on Thursday. Red Oak falls to 4–11 and will host Glenwood on Friday night.
