(Atlantic) The Atlantic girls’ basketball team looks to build off its win over Harlan last Friday night, when they host Red Oak tonight. The Trojans topped the Cyclones 52-34. Atlantic enters the game tonight with a 7-7 record. The Tigers are 4-10.
Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason credited the team’s defensive effort as the key to the Trojans’ win on Friday. He says the team has been inconsistent in that area this season.
Atlantic coupled a good defense with a solid offensive effort. Coach Vargason says the team had been struggling to score, shooting about 20-25 percent per game. That was not the case on Friday night. The Trojans shot just over 50 percent from the field.
Red Oak is playing under new head coach Carter Bruce. Coach Vargason notes that the team is shooting a lot more three-point shots.
Ellison Johnson leads the team in scoring, averaging 7.4 points per game, and leads the team in three-point shots with 17. Emily Sebeniecher is averaging 7 points per game, and Keely Jones, 5.17. The Tigers are also efficient at the free-throw line, currently shooting 61.3 percent.
Atlantic 6’0 post-player Katrina Williams leads the team in scoring, averaging 10.29 points per game, and 8 rebounds per contest. Williams 35 steals are second on the team behind Zoey Kirchhoff’s 41 takeaways, and 8.69 points per game average. Makenna Schroeder averages 8.57 points per outing.
