(Atlantic) On Wednesday, the Atlantic City Council unanimously voted to appoint Mr. Jeremy Butler to the vacant at-large city council seat. This vacancy arose when longtime councilman Gerald Brink resigned on September 1 due to health reasons.
The Iowa League of Cities indicated that there was not enough time to hold a special election before the upcoming 2025 general election, so the only option was to fill the vacancy by appointment.
Jeremy Butler and former city councilman Harlan “Lee” Sisco submitted a letter expressing interest in the position. However, on Wednesday morning, Mayor Garrett received a letter from Mr. Sisco retracting his application, as Mr. Butler had intended to run for the seat in the November 4 election.
The Council then voted unanimously to appoint Jeremy Butler, who had also submitted a letter of interest for the seat. Mayor Garrett administered the Oath of Office, and Butler officially joined the other city council members.
Jeremy Butler will serve until the next general election, scheduled for November 4, 2025, and he is currently running unopposed for the at-large seat.
Jeremy Butler has been an active member of the community, serving as past president of the Atlantic Jaycees and as both president and council member of the Atlantic United Church of Christ. He also co-chaired the fundraising committee for the Splash Pad project.
Butler says his thought process has always been to give back to the community that has blessed him. Butler, who has held numerous leadership roles, believes that leadership is about empowering people.
Butler says currently there is a lot of momentum going on in Atlantic, which he has not seen in his lifetime.
A lifelong resident of Atlantic—aside from his college years—Butler and his wife, Billie, raised their two children here. He owns his own business and also writes insurance through Brocker Karns & Karns in Atlantic.
