Anita, Iowa, was founded in 1869 when the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad came through Cass County, headed towards Council Bluffs from Atlantic. Des Moines resident B.F. Allen was among the early investors who helped to create the community. B.F. Allen is best known today for his mansion–now the governor’s mansion: Terrace Hill.
The first mayor was Edwin Cat, and the first ordinance was passed in July 1876, ensuring pedestrians had the right of way on the sidewalks.
