(Creston) — A semi driver was injured in a single-vehicle crash Monday afternoon in Union County.
According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred around 1:37 p.m. on Hi and Dry Road. The driver, 44-year-old Russell William Peterson of Creston, was behind the wheel of a northbound 1987 Freightliner hauling a load of corn when the right front wheel reportedly locked up, causing him to lose control.
The semi veered into the east ditch, then swerved across the road into the west ditch, where it tipped onto its side. The vehicle’s top dug into the embankment before overturning and striking the opposite embankment. It eventually came to rest on its wheels.
Peterson was ejected from the vehicle and found in front of the semi-tractor when authorities arrived. He was transported by ground ambulance to Greater Regional Hospital in Creston for treatment.
Damage to the semi was estimated at $40,000.
